Session border controllers (SBCs) are a key element within a VoIP network. Responsible for VoIP communications Security, Reliability, and Performance
How SBCs Work:
SBCs capture every VoIP call going in and out of the network. At this point, they perform a bunch of checks on the traffic such as source and destination check of call, then check the call authorization and applying security policies.
After verification of the traffic, SBC will go ahead route it to the correct destination. This would probably be another SBC, VoIP phone, or just old school PSTN phone.
Benefits of Using SBCs:
- Security: A variety of security mechanisms (firewalls, IDS/IPS, encryption, authentication) help to secure VoIP networks, and SBCs help to enhance these capabilities.
- Reliability : SBCs offer redundancy, load balancing, monitoring, and logging to enhance the reliability of VoIP communications.
- QoS: Specific traffic patterns are identified for SBCs, which can help with QoS Issues (prioritizing or de-prioritizing voice traffic)Performance: SBC caching and data reduction can all help increase the performance of VoIP communications (lower latency as calls are more “local” and less data is transmitted)
- Reduced Costs: SBCs unify operations, obviate the need for costly hardware, and ease communication tolls to make VoIP communications less expensive.
- Scalable: SBCs can scale to growth with your business.
Drawbacks of Using SBCs:
You should also be aware that eles are, by their nature, targets for hacking across any enterprise, so good security should be wrapped around them.
- Less flexible SBCs can stifle the flexibility and make changes a nightmare on VoIP networks.
- Performance: When traffic is optimized SBCs can add latency affecting the quality of voice.
- Cost: SBCs need more Capex for hardware, licensing, software, maintenance infrastructure.
- Configuration and Management: It can be a complex task to configure and manage SBCs and usually requires expertise. Furthermore, it might be difficult to achieve anything like full SBC support, and manufacturers are unlikely to support all potential configurations.
VoIP networks rely heavily on SBCs, which have both advantages and disadvantages.
Suggestions:
- Consider your needs carefully.
- Select an SBC that meets your requirements.
- You must account for every expense related to SBCs.
- SBC configuration and management knowledge are necessary for the efficient use of SBCs.
- Make sure SBCs are secure enough to withstand attacks by taking the necessary precautions.
